Their name may not be on everyone’s lips, but most people will have tasted dips and sandwich fillings made by South Wales based Zorba Delicacies Ltd.
The Ebbw Vale based company, which has just won a gold award at The Grocer Own Label Food & Drink Awards, is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of chilled fresh dips and deli sandwich fillings, supplying main retailers nationwide, wholesalers, food service and business to business with their products.
The company struck gold with its Moroccan style Houmous, one of 30 products it produces for Asda.
“We are delighted with this award, this is the first time we have entered a competition like this,” said managing director Chris Nash.
“We pride ourselves on our exacting quality standards and in providing customers with the personal touch. Our success is down to our excellent workforce of local staff, and the tremendous support and financial assistance we have had over the years from the Welsh Assembly Government and local authority.”
From its state of the art manufacturing unit Zorba creates a wide range of products from traditional ethnic, British and Mediterranean recipes including chilled dips, deli fillers, marinades from around the world. It manufactures both customer bespoke products as well as its own range of branded Zorba chilled dips and Vale Fine Foods deli sandwich fillers.
The company was formed more than 30 years ago by Robert Barbika who emigrated to London from Greece, and used his family’s recipes to make Houmous, Taramasalata, and Tzatziki which he sold to local restaurants and delis in London.
Ten years later the company was sold and soon after – with government support - relocated to a purpose built facility in Ebbw Vale, enabling it to expand its range of products.
In 2003 it was bought by American company, the Entrepreneurial Food Group, and has undergone rapid growth, and now employs around 250 people.
In November 2009 the company received assistance from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Single Investment Fund (SiF) to expand the production facility which now encompasses two further adjoining units taking its production area to 100,000 sq feet.
